With modern spectrophotometers is easy to record and store whole spectra. This does not mean that absorbance data cannot be collected by hand at a few selected wavelengths, though that process is not as common as it used to be in times past. Data collected by hand can be entered by hand or stored in a file as with data collected automatically.
HypSpec can accept data in the form of wavelength, absorbance data pairs. For example,
250, 0.2084
252, 0.1948
254, 0.1813
...
Such data can be stored as text, preferably with the extension IAD (Instrument Absorbance Data). Modern spectrophotometers can usually store data in this form.
HypSpec can also accept a series of spectra. The spectra are first entered
into columns of a spreadsheet program such as Excel. Some additional information
is placed in the first few rows and then the data is saved as text in tab-separated
form. The first few rows and columns of sample data files are shown below.
